Alchemy Utilities, Finnish research and development arm, Eneferm Oy and City of Haapajärvi (Finland) have taken a big step forward in their ongoing co-operation. Eneferm Oy will be one of the key partners for the new BioStudio – development project. Eneferm Oy and the City of Haapajärvi has secured project funding from The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) to progress the research and development project.
The ERDF aims to strengthen economic and social cohesion in the European Union by correcting imbalances between its regions. To do this the ERDF focuses its investments on several key priority areas. This is known as ‘thematic concentration’:
- Innovation and research;
- The digital agenda;
- Support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SME’s)
- The low-carbon economy
The total budget for this development project is 636,000 Euros and the primary aim is to build a biotechnology research and development facility for the development of the Alchemy biomass dry digestion technology.

This investment will not only consolidate and strengthen our existing research facilities but importantly enable Alchemy to accelerate its ability to process even more aggressive and diverse organic waste streams.

The new development areas include feedstock pre-processing, reject material processing, and fertiliser testing and production. The aim is also to improve the expertise and competitiveness of bioenergy companies in the region by building a testing facility that is focussed on the agricultural and business sectors. One key outcome of the project is to enable our biotech companies in the region to actively develop their own products and services and thus gain new business, new jobs and vitality in the area.
It’s extremely refreshing to see the Finnish government investing in the future development of renewable technologies that are not reliant of government subsidies for the viable production of biogas from organic waste. This investment represents a massive step in Alchemy’s ability to demonstrate the worldwide market potential of dry digestion and organic fertiliser production
